A major exhibition to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of The Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers, incorporated in 1623 - bringing together contemporary and historical treasures including a piece of the only surviving dress worn by Queen Elizabeth I, royal robes, military uniforms, jewellery and embroidery.

In 2019 I was delighted to be made a Freeman of The Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers - one of the 111 historic Livery Companies of the City of London.

The Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers was incorporated in 1423 and received their first Charter in 1623 from King James I but this was not ratified by Parliament. In 1693 a second charter was granted by King William and Queen Mary. The Company was granted Livery status in 1780 and numbered 74 on the City Livery list.

The Livery Companies or Guilds began in medieval times as “fraternities” or “misteries” to protect the interests of particular trades and to maintain high standards of business conduct and product quality. They also helped in the education of future generations in the particular ways of the trade or craft, and supporting those members of the company or their families who had fallen on hard times or suffering poor health.

Today, there are 111 City of London Livery Companies, some of very ancient origin dating back 700 years. Liverymen play an integral part in the life and governance of the City to this day in electing the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs at Common Hall in Guildhall.
